We had a sweet start to the day today. Until now, when we asked Mei for a hug she would come and put her back to us, allowing us to wrap our arms around her. She would smile and giggle. Today, I held her when she got up and she leaned into me, so we were chest to chest. A true snuggle! This may not sound like much, but it is forward movement for us, another step.
Mei is showing her independence today. Previously, I would help dress, put on her socks and shoes, etc. I did this mostly for bonding, not knowing how much she usually does for herself. Today, she told me she could do it (I don't understand the words, but I knew what she was saying). She insisted on doing all these things for herself. Big girl!
Another mother in the group did some Googling and found that the patches we are using are not for kids, mostly because of the dosage. I did some investigating and after conferring with our family nurse, we cut the patch in quarters. We put the little quarter pie shaped sticker behind her ear and prayed for the best. She did great on the bus again today! We fly to Guangzhou on Friday, so hopefully the little quarter dose will work for that as well. Our guide interpreted for us this morning, as we explained that we will be on an airplane Friday. A puzzled look came upon Mei's face, and then become expressionless. I'm not sure if she understood what flying really means, or if she was scared. It was hard to tell. Friday may be very interesting.
Each day, we learn a little more about Mei. She likes Minnie Mouse (pronounced something like Mee Lauh Suh). She has the loudest sneeze I've ever heard - more like a yell. She will eat almost anything put in front of her. She is a tease to those she is comfortable with. She showed us how she can write her numbers up to 50 in regular (US) characters and to 10 in Chinese. Perhaps she knows further, but she wrote these down for us. She copied the ABC's neatly from a notepad a friend gave us for her (not sure if she knew what these were?). When she is awake, she is going all the time. When her head hits the pillow, she is out like a light. :)
Lainie's fan club followed us to a market today. An old man tried to get her attention as we passed him. He talked to her and tapped her on the head. At another booth, the woman was asking our guide about us. When she heard we adopted three of the children, she said it was very nice and started handing out fresh boiled shrimp to all. We allowed Mei to take a shrimp, but the rest of us declined as we aren't sure of the water here. I carried Mei's prize shrimp through the market by it's whiskers for a bit to let it cool off. Once we reached a trash can, I peeled it for her. She thought the shrimp was a fine treat! Kailee's mouth was watering over it and she felt slighted to not eat seafood. :)
Love to everyone back home -
